Dear Parents, Guardians, and Community Members,
As we begin our 6th week of school, I wanted to thank you for your continued support and understanding as we continue to navigate our way through the school year. It has always been our intention to provide in person learning and we will continue providing in person learning as long as we can.
As you know, we have put into place several measures to help ensure that our students remain with us in the school building. Some of these measures are obvious ones like social distancing in class and at lunch, the wearing of masks, the providing of hand sanitizer to students and staff, and the encouragement of good hygiene practices with students. Some measures are not as noticeable such as the nightly cleaning that takes place in the buildings and the contact tracing measures put into place in every classroom.
One thing that you have probably noticed is the pulling back of some extra activities that our students usually get to participate in. While it is our hope to continue as many extra curricular activities and contests as we can, we have been forced to cancel a fair amount of these activities as well. Rest assured that any cancellations are for the safety and welfare of all and we ask for your understanding in this. In addition to some cancellations, contests and meetings within the buildings will have to look different in order to allow our students to participate safely. As new procedures are announced, we again thank you for your cooperation in adhering to these guidelines.
Our ultimate goal is to keep students on campus in the safest way possible. With the procedures we have put in place, we feel that we are accomplishing that goal. Hopefully we can get back to more of a “normal” in the near future, but until that time, we ask and thank you for your continued support.

School meals (breakfast and lunch) are now available at no charge to all Silex R-I School District students under a temporary waiver from the USDA.
The free meal service will start on Thursday, October 1st and will continue through the end of December 2020 or until the federal funding is no longer available. All students are eligible for this program.
The Silex R-I School District is committed to ensuring no child goes hungry and has sponsored free meals and Owls Pals bags throughout the pandemic, even following the closure of our school buildings in the spring. The USDA waiver provides funding to ensure nutritious meals continue to reach all children in this unprecedented time.
There’s no need to apply for the benefit; all children through the age of 18 are automatically eligible for free meals.
